Father Stephen Imbarrato, Founder & Chaplain
Fr. Stephen (left) pictured here with Archbishop of Santa Fe, Michael Sheehan. Father Stephen Imbarrato has been active in pro-life ministry for many years, mentored by some of the true leaders of pro-Life work, including Father Frank Pavone, Father Tom Euteneuer, Monsignor Philip Reilly, and Gregg Cunningham.
While attending Holy Apostles Seminary, Father helped start a crisis pregnancy center across the street from an abortion business. He explains, “…being across from the abortion mill showed me how important it is to have ministries of life directly across from the gates of death.”
Ordained in May of 2005 for the Archdiocese of Santa Fe, Father Stephen learned of a small adoration chapel located directly across from a Planned Parenthood facility in Albuquerque. The Blessed Sacrament was reserved for Adoration thanks to the generosity of Archbishop Michael Sheehan who, several years ago, allowed the Catholic Knights, under the auspices of Mike Esquibel, to retain the Blessed Sacrament.
At the time, Project Life was dedicated to prayer vigils and sidewalk counseling in front of Planned Parenthood. One of Project Life’s esteemed pro-life “missionaries”, Mr. Phillip Leahy, has been ministering to moms in crisis pregnancies and saving babies from the jaws of death for many years. He continues to lead this vital work today for Project Defending Life.
Using the chapel as a focal point, and prompted by the Holy Spirit to rejuvenate Project Life, Father Stephen saw the need for a comprehensive pro-life ministry to supplement the pro-life efforts already going on in the archdiocese.
In early 2006, Father Stephen gathered a group of laypeople, forming the new Project Defending Life.
