“We are praying that, with God’s help, this groundbreaking effort will mark the beginning of the end of abortion in New Mexico and throughout America,” said Father Stephen Imbarrato, founder of Project Defending Life.
Key efforts of the 40 Days for Life campaign include:
- Prayer and Fasting—inviting people of faith in Albuquerque to join together for 40 days of prayer and fasting to end abortion
- Peaceful Vigil—standing for life during a 40-day long peaceful public witness outside Planned Parenthood (719 San Mateo N.E. in Albuquerque)
- Community Outreach—educating the public about the pro-life message
The public prayers and demonstrations will be coordinated from the Project Defending Life Center, a pro-life center located next door to an Albuquerque Planned Parenthood abortion clinic. Protesters will gather at Project Defending Life every hour each day of the week during the campaign and head to the abortion clinic for prayer. In past years on Good Friday, Planned Parenthood has stopped performing abortions in order to hire people to heckle pro-life protesters.
Over the past three years, there have been measurable decreases in the number of abortions at local abortion clinics in those cities that have been involved in the 40 Days for Life campaign. In 2007, some cities reported as much as a 28 percent drop in abortions at local clinics and an increase in the number of people who became involved with local lifesaving ministry efforts. Every year approximately 5,000 abortions are performed each year in New Mexico.
Project Defending Life (PDL) is a Catholic pro-life ministry in New Mexico that sponsors many programs geared towards stopping abortions and helping families in need. PDL maintains a pro-life chapel and resource center 50 feet from a Planned Parenthood abortion center in Albuquerque.
