On Monday, September 30, 2008 at UNM, Dauneen Dulce of the Right to
Life Committee of New Mexico and Heather Brewer of NARAL Pro-Choice
New Mexico met to debate abortion, contraception, and related Supreme
Court decisions. The debate took place in the Atrium area of the UNM
Student Union Building (SUB). As such, attendance fluctuated, but
there were about fifty or so that were seated in front of the stage.
Throughout the debate, Dulce asserted that an abortion causes the
destruction an unborn human being. Brewer, however, refused to
address this assertion and, instead, presented her position as women
simply exercising their rights in procuring an abortion.
Dauneen Dulce, at one point, described the barbaric details of a
partial birth abortion. Brewer claimed that neither she nor Dulce
had the medical background to discuss the effects of a partial birth
abortion. Another memorable moment, concerning the role of doctors,
was when Dulce cited the Hippocratic oath, stating that doctors once
swore not to give women an abortion remedy. Brewer denied this and
insinuated that Dulce had simply made this up. Following the debate,
however, Alice Barela of the UNM St. Thomas More Society found the
classical Hippocratic Oath on the internet and confirmed the exact
passage that Dulce cited. Overall, the crowd was predominantly
pro-abortion, but there was also a small group of pro-lifers,
including members of the UNM School of Law St. Thomas More Society.
