Thousands of pro-lifers march in Santa Fe

Thu Jan 22 '09 10:11 pm

More than 3,000 pro-life activists filled the streets of Santa Fe today to witness for life, family, and marriage. Families, youth, and citizens marked this 36th anniversary of the Roe vs Wade Supreme Court decision that struck down abortion laws in all 50 states.

Led by three Catholic bishops and dozens of Catholic priests and protestant pastors, the pro-life crowd processed from the Basilica Cathedral of St Francis through the plaza area of Santa Fe to converge at the Roundhouse. There, the activists asked legislators, on the 3rd day of their session, to opposed abortion on demand, homosexual marriages, and embryonic stem cell research—all issues potentially on the state docket in this 60 day session.

The event began the night before when 350 people, mostly teens, attended a Mass at St Anne’s in Santa Fe followed by a youth concert and all night vigils at three churches in the city of Holy Faith.

Thursday morning, hundreds of people attended a conference with over a dozen pro-life exhibits at the Inn at Loretto. Archbishop Michael Sheehan, State Senator Bill Sharer, and former US Congressman Bill Redmond were among the morning conference speakers.

The noon Mass at the Cathedral was attended by approximately 2,500 people. There was also a non-denominational prayer service at the Inn at Loretto. Both groups met in front of the Cathedral for the walk to the Roundhouse where the crowd heard Bishop Ramirez from Las Cruces and others urge them to ask state legislators to oppose the liberal agenda being put forth in the family-oriented state of New Mexico.

At the end of rally, blue and pink balloons were released by the crowd as they gridlocked the statehouse for the 2nd year running. During the march and the rally, large signs depicting the horrible truth about abortion could be seen throughout the large and energized crowd.

The second annual Sanctity of Life Awareness and Unity event was sponsored by Project Defending Life and the The New Mexico Conference of Catholic Bishops in cooperation with pro-life organizations and ministries throughout the state.
